The Trump administration has been highly critical of the organization and has announced recently a series of withdrawals and funding cuts that are impacting its operations, including humanitarian aid and peacekeeping operations. The panelists will explore the impact of U.S. policy on the UN and how the organization may change in the years ahead. That’s what we have said each year since the debut of the conference on America’s Role in the World, which first convened in this building in 2016. But it’s never been truer than now, at this time of shifting alignments and firsts of all kinds. Are these shifts a passing phase or a structural break from the post-war international system? What are the driving forces? What is the impact on changing domestic priorities on foreign policy? How should policy makers and planners respond? | 1:00-2:15pm | Space Governance Space may be the final frontier, but it’s quickly becoming an epicenter of geopolitical competition and commercial interest; in short, it’s getting crowded. This panel examines the current state of space governance and the possibilities to modernize existing frameworks to meet the complexities of the twenty-first era. With the rapid expansion of commercial satellite constellations bringing space-based Internet access and possibility hosting data centers in low-earth orbit, the looming threat of orbital debris, NASA’s impending return to the Moon, and escalating geopolitical competition over lunar resources, the session explores how U.S. diplomacy can establish "rules of the road" that balance national security with private sector innovation. Experts will discuss how American leadership can help ensure the cosmos remains a stable, peaceful frontier rather than a fraught new theater for conflict.
